I Turned My Dad’s Old Drag Tire Into a Table — Here’s How It Went

Before and after comparison of a DIY tire table project showing a worn-out racing tire turned into a stylish glass-top table with a black finish and restored lettering.

Over six years ago, my dad gave me an old racing tire. It sat around collecting dust until one day, I had an idea: what if I turned it into something meaningful? Fast forward to now, and I finally turned that tire into a fully functional table — just in time for an early Father’s Day surprise.

The best part? You can make one too.

This DIY tire table build is beginner-friendly and doesn’t require a fancy shop or expensive tools. In my full video, I show the entire process — from cleaning years of grime, restoring cracked rubber, hand-painting the lettering (with very shaky hands), and creating a custom plywood base with hairpin legs.

I also share how I found the glass top for cheap, and a few tips to avoid the mistakes I made (like trusting random Facebook Marketplace sellers named Christopher… don’t be a Christopher).

In the end, surprising my dad with something built from his old racing tire — the same one we’ve had in the family since 2015 — was honestly one of the most rewarding moments I’ve had with a DIY project.

👉 Important note:

Another very important thing I want to mention if you are planning to make this yourself is tires can release VOCs also known as off gassing which can cause health problems with prolonged exposure. The main reason why I am not as concerned with this is because of the tires age and that it will not be stored inside. If you plan to build one of these make sure to do research on this topic.

Whether you're hunting for a meaningful DIY gift for dad, building out a man cave, or just want a fun weekend project — I can honestly say this one’s worth trying.
